If you do an Internet search for anything relating to Oak Lawn School District 122 and the religious holiday conundrum it has recently been involved in, you’ll see how many others have gotten upset over the situation. Prior to the Internet would this have stirred up such debate? It might have been on the news and even in newspapers outside of Illinois, but I believe the Internet allows much more debate on subjects that make people irate.
What is disheartening to me is that many people have read or heard about the original idea of getting rid of religious holidays being celebrated in the school district and did not read about the final decision that simply added another one. This just goes to show how the media can invoke anger and form opinions on something (in this case the entire town of Oak Lawn, IL) without knowing the whole story.
Here is another blog entry about the Oak Lawn story.
